Georg Marcus Stein 1788-1791

State of preservation: original, with exception of the front pipes requisitioned in 1917; their restoration in 1971 based on measurements of 1917.

The Betberg organ is an important monument of the work of the Stein family. When his older brother and teacher Johann Andreas Stein moved to Augsburg, Georg Marcus Stein stayed at home and built instruments of small or medium dimensions. He did not gain any contracts of a size comparable to Johann Andreas Stein's new organ in Augsburg Barfüßer and so his work remained in the shadow of his brother's. Obviously the traditional home area in Baden could not offer a sufficient income, and so his son Johann Andreas Stein (II) emigrated to Livonia (Riga, later Valmiera and Tallinn).
